Tobi Lütke, Founder & Chief Executive Officer
Tobi is an active advocate for sustainability, computer literacy, and education, and serves as a board member of Canada Learning Code, an organization working to give all Canadians access to digital skills. He also served as Chair of the Digital Industries Table, an advisory board commissioned by the federal government to provide recommendations on how to turn Canada into a digital leader.
Harley Finkelstein, President
Harley Finkelstein is President at Shopify and has been with the company since 2010. He oversees Shopify’s commercial teams, growth & external affairs.
Harley holds a Bachelor degree in Economics from Concordia University and a J.D./M.B.A. joint degree in Law and Business from the University of Ottawa. Prior to his current role, Harley was Shopify’s COO and has founded numerous startups and ecommerce companies.
Amy Shapero, Chief Financial Officer
Amy Shapero is the Chief Financial Officer at Shopify and joined in April 2018. Prior to joining Shopify, Amy was the Chief Financial Officer at Betterment, an online wealth-management service, since 2016. Previously, Amy was Chief Financial Officer at Sailthru, and Senior Vice President of Strategy, Corporate Development and Corporate Communications at DigitalGlobe.
Amy began her career as a CPA at Ernst & Young, followed by investment banking positions at Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs serving emerging growth companies. She holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Allan Leinwand, Chief Technology Officer
Allan Leinwand is Chief Technology Officer at Shopify, joining in 2021 to lead the engineering teams. Prior to Shopify, Allan was Senior Vice President of Engineering at Slack from pre-IPO, transforming the way work gets done for hundreds of thousands of companies and tens of millions of users. Previously, Allan was Chief Technology Officer at ServiceNow, and has co-founded and held senior leadership positions at multiple companies and was also a venture capital investor for seven years.
Allan previously served as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Berkeley where he taught on the subjects of computer networks, network management and network design. He holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He co-authored “Cisco Router Configuration” and “Network Management: A Practical Perspective” and has been granted a patent in the field of data routing.
John Asante, Chief Information Security Officer
John Asante is the Chief Information Security Officer at Shopify since 2021, where he leads Shopify’s Trust organization, overseeing the company’s efforts in cybersecurity, fraud, abuse, and privacy. John joined Shopify from Google, where he led the Cloud Security & Trust Center. Prior to Google, John was Vice President, Global Head of Cyber Defense at Visa where he was responsible for the operational defense of the world’s largest payment system. John also co-founded the client facing incident response group at Microsoft, and has a track record of innovative security engineering and successful defense at other high-profile organizations, including Nike, Mastercard, and the US Department of Defense.
John specializes in defence at scale and building world-class cybersecurity organizations and is a graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle.
Toby Shannan, Chief Operating Officer
Toby Shannan is the Chief Operating Officer at Shopify and has been with the company since 2010. Toby oversees global business operations, revenue and sales functions, as well as Shopify’s talent and customer support strategies.
Prior to joining Shopify, Toby co-founded and was the Chief Executive Officer of Social Fabric, a personal genomics company, and served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing at DNA Genotek where he helped commercialise the Oragene spit kit used by personal genomic companies such as 23andme.
Toby is a board member and trustee at the Santa Fe Institute and has been a member of the Institute’s Applied Complexity Network (ACtioN) since 2017. He is a poet and an avid rugby fan, player, and coach.
Jess Hertz, General Counsel
Jess Hertz is General Counsel at Shopify since 2021, where she oversees our global legal team.
Jess is a U.S. lawyer with significant tech, policy, and operational experience. Before joining Shopify, she served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary to President Biden. She also served as General Counsel for the Biden-Harris Transition Team, where she oversaw all legal aspects for the presidential transition in 2020-2021.
Prior to her work for the Biden administration, Jess led the North America regulatory team for Facebook, where she was responsible for managing the company's civil regulatory inquiries.
Previous to her work at Facebook, Jess was a partner at Jenner & Block LLP, a Chicago-based private law firm. Jess earned her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School, and her undergraduate degree from Harvard College.
Tia Silas, Chief Talent Officer
Tia Silas is Shopify’s Chief Talent Officer, joining in 2022 to oversee Culture, Internal Operations, Employee Experience & Talent teams.
Prior to joining Shopify, Tia was EVP of Human Resources at Wells Fargo, where she was responsible for leading people strategies across a number of areas such as Global Technology, Strategy, Digital and Innovation, as well as the Corporate and Investment Bank. Tia also worked at IBM as the Global Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer where she was responsible for driving diversity and inclusion strategies across the globe with hundreds of thousands of employees.
Tia graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in industrial and labor relations, and attained her MBA from New York University, Stern School of Business.
