Shopify Now Using Rackspace Hosting

August 31, 2009

OTTAWA, ONTARIO — Aug. 31, 2009 –Shopify.com, a premier hosted ecommerce solution provider, announced today that it is now using Rackspace Hosting, the world’s leader in hosting and cloud computing, to service its IT requirements and the needs of its merchants.

Shopify was using a self-built computing cluster, but the increasing requirements of bandwidth and reliability prompted the operations team to look for a great hosting partner. Their search led them to Rackspace’s Managed Colocation because it gives users the control to manage all aspects of their hosting environment, but also has the added benefit of managed hardware. The Rackspace team assisted Shopify in building a world-class computing cluster in its facilities. This change will allow the Shopify Platform unhindered growth in the future.

All new and existing Shopify clients automatically enjoy the high quality of the new hosting facility because Shopify is a hosted solution. The entire data center move was executed in less than 60 minutes with the expert help of Rackspace and Percona, a provider of pay-as-you-go consulting for the popular LAMP stack and other open-source software.

“Rackspace’s Managed Colocation product is the ideal hosting solution for our SaaS business. Their world class facilities coupled with Fanatical Support® are exactly what we need to scale our business," Cody Fauser, Shopify’s CTO, said “Shopify serves more than 5,000 customers and is growing. With so many businesses relying on Shopify, the hosting company that we selected had to be as dedicated to their customers as we are.”

Since 2005, Shopify has been serving small- and medium-sized businesses all over the world with a professional, cost-effective way of selling online. Both new online ventures and existing businesses benefit from using Shopify, which is a turnkey solution. Shopify lets merchants present a beautiful, professional online store to their customers, backed by industry-standard technology and partnerships with payment gateways such as Authorize.Net, PayPal, and Google Checkout. Shopify merchants also benefit from partnerships with fulfillment services and custom application developers through the Shopify App Store, which allows any store to be customized to fit the needs of the merchant.

“Rackspace is pleased to be working with a SaaS leader like Shopify that creates solutions to make ecommerce simple for their customers. Rackspace’s Managed Colocation solution gives Shopify complete control of their environment, while leaving the headache of data center and hardware management to Rackspace,” said Chris Cochran, director of Rackspace’s Managed Colocation business. “Rackspace believes Managed Colocation is a superior hosting solution for SaaS businesses, like Shopify, that have deep technical expertise and must focus their efforts on the customer and the platform, not the data center.”
