Shopify Payments Expands to Germany

Offering locally relevant payment methods allow merchants to reach their customers globally

GERMANY – October 30, 2018 – Shopify Inc. (NYSE: SHOP) (TSX: SHOP), the leading omni-channel commerce platform, today announced that Shopify Payments has expanded to Germany. This expansion offers German merchants with an out-of-the-box payments solution in addition to providing payment methods that are locally relevant to their customers. Working with leading payments provider Klarna, Shopify Payments will offer payment methods that best suit customers in Germany.

Shopify Payments is linked directly to a merchant’s store, allowing them to receive payments from buyers using credit cards around the world and payouts seamlessly without the hassle of a long set up process. All of this happens directly within the Shopify admin, right alongside the rest of their shop management, making it easier to manage orders and accounting. To meet the growing demand for payment methods that are relevant around the world, Shopify Payments has expanded its offering to Germany enabling Klarna's Pay Later and Pay Now solution, Sofort. This provides an improved customer experience for shoppers, and also allows merchants to reach more buyers.

With the integration, Shopify merchants will be able to offer their customers with the option to pay instantly via debit transfers at checkout or pay for their products up to 30 days later with no interest or fees. For shoppers in Germany, the “Pay later” option is one of the most widely used payment methods, giving shoppers the ability to trial a product before paying for it. Almost 27 percent of all German shoppers today prefer this payment method according to the research institute Statista.

"Shopify accidentally went global when merchants around the world began using our software,” said Tobi Lütke, CEO, Shopify. “Now, we’re strategically going local. We want to make sure that Shopify works perfectly in Germany, and Klarna and its payment alternatives really complete our checkout system.”

“Klarna’s partnership with Shopify is going from strength to strength,” said Sebastian Siemiatkowski, CEO, Klarna. “Strong merchant demand has driven this expansion into Germany, as merchants seek to compete effectively with the payment methods preferred by their customers. Shopify and Klarna together will further unlock valuable growth for merchants by providing an exceptional customer experience through frictionless checkout. For merchants this integration will help drive conversion rates, increase average order value and ultimately build  customer loyalty.”

At launch, Shopify Payments Germany will offer Klarna’s Pay Now solution, Sofort, with its Pay Later function becoming available in the upcoming months.
